Ricky May Gives to Boys Home of Virginia

Ricky May, a native of Covington, VA, has found an exciting way to give to Boys Home during the Christmas season.

Ricky is a sales consultant at Magic City Auto Group located in Covington, VA. He recently contacted Boys Home and shared the news that he would like to donate $25 for every vehicle he sells between now and December 20.

Ricky May and his wife, Ann, have supported and been connected with Boys Home for years, but he felt this would be an interesting and enticing way to give back to the community during the holidays.

If you’re considering purchasing a vehicle this holiday season, drop by Magic City Chevrolet Buick GMC at 345 Thacker Avenue and talk with Ricky. Boys Home is grateful for his support and that of the Alleghany Highlands community as we endeavor to give these young men a second chance at success.

Boys Home Christmas Spectacular 2018

On Friday, December 14, all are invited to Boys Home to join in the Christmas Spectacular! Starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Boys Home gym, the Christmas Spectacular will be an event for the whole family, including games, crafts, singing, dancing, and the play “A Christmas to Believe In.” Admission is free.

Almost half of all the Boys Home students and a number of staff members are participating in the Christmas Spectacular as actors, singers, dancers, and stage hands. Under the guidance of new English and Drama teacher Jacy Burdette, students are building confidence as they act, speak, sing, and dance on stage and in front of their peers. Behind the scenes, students and staff have been busy designing and building sets, making costumes, making props, and otherwise brightening up the stage. Please join the Boys Home community for a fun evening supporting their hard work!

Congratulations to Brittany Jefferson for 5 Years of Service

Congratulations to Brittany Jefferson for five years of service at Boys Home of Virginia!

Brittany is no stranger to Boys Home. When Brittany was growing up, her mother and father were houseparents in Brown cottage. Following in their footsteps, Brittany is now a houseparent in Watkins Cottage. Watkins Cottage is Boys Home’s elementary level cottage. Brittany’s father is still at Boys Home and works as Campus Life Manager. Brittany’s mother is a special education teacher in the public school system.

Brittany graduated from Covington High School in 2010 and then began classes at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College while working as a lifeguard at the YMCA. After her time at DSLCC, Brittany worked at the Shenandoah Autism Center for one year. She enjoyed her time there but decided to come back to Boys Home as it was a familiar place and somewhere she called “home.”

One of Brittany’s favorite things about working at Boys Home is the time with the students during the holidays. She says it is so heart warming to see the students so excited about the season. Brittany says during the holidays, you see a completely different side of the students.

Brittany says what she looks forward to advancing and growing in her career at Boys Home. The administration is grateful for Brittany’s dedication to the mission of Boys Home of Virginia.

Boys Home Celebrates Giving Tuesday!

You’ve heard of Black Friday, and possibly Cyber Monday. But have you heard of Giving Tuesday? Celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday provides a platform that inspires the donation of time, resources, and talents to address local challenges. Giving Tuesday engages nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses, corporations, families, and individuals to start the holiday season in the spirit of generosity. In its seventh year, Giving Tuesday is popular and growing in more than 150 countries.

Our community is invited to start the holiday season off right by giving to Boys Home! All Giving Tuesday donations will support our Accelerated Reading program, which encourages students to read using individualized goals, reading comprehension quizzes, and a variety of prizes. This year, the Accelerated Reading program has been expanded to include all Boys Home students.

On November 26th and 27th, Boys Home is celebrating Giving Tuesday in a special way! Students and staff will kick off the holiday season with two days of emphasis on kindness and generosity. You are invited to join us by sharing how you are spreading kindness and generosity in your own lives.

For more details, take a look at our Facebook page on 11/26 and 11/27.
