Remember Boys Home on #GivingTuesdayNow – May 5, 2020

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths and political views together across the globe.

In an effort to keep everyone safe and healthy, we have had to adapt to a new way of life here on campus. As we continue to provide the children with everything they need to succeed and live as normally as possible, our expenses have remained the same and even broadened. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel or postpone several on campus visits and fundraising events this spring. On this day of global giving, we ask that you help us navigate through these changes by donating to Boys Home of Virginia online (click here) or give Melinda a call at 540-965-7707.

Thank you in advance for your generosity during these uncertain times and your continued support of Boys Home. We greatly appreciate it.

Boys Home Honors Ingevity

At the Boys Home basketball game on December 3rd, Boys Home honored Ingevity for their generous partnership with Boys Home over the past several years. Their contributions have ranged from conducting mock job interviews, to making possible the Ingevity Student Center in the lobby of the gym, hosting back-to-school picnics, playing GaGa, and most recently, providing funding to renovate the gym floor. In recent years, the gym floor had begun to buckle and develop soft spots in several places, presenting a tripping hazard for those using it. After its renovation, the floor is safer to play on, and the lightly finished maple flooring makes the whole gymnasium lighter and brighter.

Leading up to the game, Athletics Director Bobby Trice spoke about how Ingevity has not only provided financial support, but employees have taken the time to get to know and care for the students at Boys Home. Mr. Trice spoke for the whole Boys Home community when he said, “Ingevity is not only a supporter of Boys Home, they’re family.”

A group of Ingevity employees then stayed to watch the game, which was a close competition between Boys Home and Bath County, ending with a 32-35 loss for Boys Home. Regardless of the score, Boys Home students, staff, and supporters are proud of the Boys Home basketball team for a game well-played, and all continue to be thankful for a beautifully renovated facility to play in.

Mission Group Brings Fun and Builds New Relationships

Recently, seven members of the Northside Baptist Church youth group, along with group leaders Bob and Karen Mills and chaperones Trudy Carlton and Lyn Folk, spent the week of July 22 – 26 at Boys Home of Virginia, helping with a variety of activities and projects across campus. All the Boys Home students enjoyed their time with the visitors.

The group brought a remarkable energy to campus during their time at Boys Home, participating in the morning summer enrichment program, afternoon work projects, and evening praise and worship sessions. During summer enrichment, youth group members were paired with students to help with reading fluency and math flashcards. With the addition of new friends, Boys Home students were energized and happy to learn. After lunch when the weather permitted, the youth group helped painted the pergola outside the administration building, often with the help of several of the Boys Home students. On rainy afternoons, they helped with office work and cleaned and organized the clothing room. Each evening, the group offered praise and worship sessions for all who were interested, including songs, a reflection, and prayer. Most Boys Home students participated, especially since praise and worship sessions were followed by group games around campus!

Although Northside Baptist is located several hours away from Covington in Mechanicsville, the church has had a connection with Boys Home for years through Bob Mills, a member of the church, an alum of Boys Home, and the alumni representative on the Boys Home Board of Trustees. When Bob and his wife Karen got involved with the youth group summer mission trips, they decided that Boys Home would be a great place for a trip. They hope to bring the youth group to Boys Home every couple years to help on campus and catch up with old friends!

Volunteers work with students on math flashcards.
Thank you for all your hard work!
