A Lifting of Voices is the first annual celebration of uplifting a cappella music to benefit the Boys Home of Virginia.
The concert includes four of the Richmond area’s finest a cappella groups coming together to perform songs from across the musical spectrum. Each group will perform individually followed by an inspiring finale where every group will come together. Every song has been selected to fill your heart and lift your spirit and all proceeds go to children who need our help at the Boys Home of Virginia.
The concert will be held at the Robins Theatre at The Steward School in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 3 PM. Tickets are available here »
All successful men were once boys. But not all boys become successful men. That’s why Boys Home of Virginia is so important. We provide care for boys aged six through eighteen who have encountered obstacles and need a second chance to succeed.
Since 1906, our mission has been to provide care and education to help boys develop physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. We operate with 97% private funds and no boy is turned away because of their family’s inability to pay. As we grow our costs also rise and we must find more supporters like you to take part in raising successful young men.
COW (College Orientation Workshop) is held at VMI each year for minority young men who are rising juniors and seniors. It’s a 4 week program where the young men are pushed mentally, physically, and challenged to be the best they can be. Sequoia (left) and Keith (right) pictured above, were this year’s attendees from Boys Home.
WDBJ Channel 7 out of Roanoke did a feature on the program that can be watched HERE.
We’re very proud of these young men and their accomplishments. At graduation for the COW program, each graduate read a speech about their experience. Below are Sequoia and Keith’s speeches:
In June, Boys Home of Virginia was hit by two strong storms, both leaving damage in their path. On June 16, in Alleghany County, a heavy, intense wind storm swept through the area leaving trees and branches down, damage to houses and buildings, and thousands without power. A week later, on June 23, Boys Home was in the path of a storm that brought heavy downpours and flooding waters to the area. Boys Home, fortunately, had no damage to buildings during the wind storm and was not among the hardest hit areas during the flooding. However, we have sustained damage to several parts of the campus that will require extensive repairs.
Boys Home is thankful to the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) in the Diocese of Southern Virginia for blessing our graduating seniors with a love offering through the “God Bless the Children” project. Nancy Sands, president of the ECW for Southern Virginia, joined us for the 2016 Awards Banquet to present the seniors with their gift.
